The terms ‘pyramid scheme’ and ‘scam’ strike instant fear into the heart of every would-be home based business owner out there and, for many budding ‘homepreneurs’ (home based business entrepreneurs), starting a search for a legitimate and lucrative home based business opportunity can be a very daunting prospect.

Finding the right business may take some time, and will certainly require you to do your due diligence. But to help you, I have put together a simple check-list of the most important things that I believe you should take into account when deciding how ‘real’ any business opportunity is, and how likely you are to be able to succeed with it within a reasonable time-frame.

- Is the website original or is it just another generic spin-off promoting a company that promises you can ‘get rich in the next 48 hours’? People with a real business to offer will have something real to promote, and most likely the website will give you an insight into who they are and what it was they wanted when they came to the industry.

- Is there a phone number on the website? Can you have a conversation with a real person, who actually cares about what it is you are looking for and can honestly advise you as to whether their company may be able to help? Or are you dealing with an automated system, that assumes you are a moron and tells you that all you need to do is sign-up now and then find some other morons who might like to do the same?

- Do you know roughly what it is that you are going to be doing? Any business worth its salt should have an ‘About The Business’ section on the website that gives you some idea of what you will be doing or selling.

- Can existing participants be contacted? By speaking to a few people who are already making money through the business you can get a real insight into what it is about and how it is run. Do not just settle for written testimonials and reviews on the website, as these are often fake.

- Is there a set-up fee? This is a tricky one. If you are looking for a business that is going to provide a proven structure for you, with high-quality training and support, that is going to significantly improve your chances of success, who do you think is going to bear the cost of all that? The company has to make a profit somewhere! So, do not only consider free business opportunities.

As a final point, and this is the real acid test, you can tell how confident a company is in itself and its system by asking if they offer a money back guarantee to anyone who is unsatisfied with their product or service. All reputable companies will do just that, so avoid any that do not.

A quick search on Google, king of the search engines, reveals a staggering 74,800,000 results for the search term ‘Online Business Opportunities’. Where have they all come from, and what is the reason for such a prolific rise in the last couple of years?

Put simply, it is a standard case of supply and demand. As demand for online business opportunities started to rise, companies started to offer more and more ways for people to make money online.

That increase in demand being a result of people struggling to make ends meet in these tough economic times. For lots of people, supplementing their main income has now become a necessity.

For an increasing number of us, the cumbersome and unwieldy nature of a part-time job that demands a set number of hours at a set time each day, rates a very poor second to the ability to work on our own terms, utilizing the pockets of time that we find available to ourselves on a day-to-day basis.

It is not that we do not have the time, it is just that if everything on the schedule is trying to operate from a rigid, set structure, with no room for compromise, there are just going to be too many ‘timetable clashes’ for the whole thing to work. And that is assuming that with the job market being the way it is, there are any spare time jobs even available for consideration!

Online business opportunities have therefore become a fully valid alternative. The amount of work available, the flexibility of the working schedule, and the future growth potential are seen as an ideal scenario.

Another major factor in the phenomenal rise in online business opportunities, however, is the fact that it is only in the last few years that it has become realistic to even entertain running a business from a computer in your own home.

The availability of high-speed broadband connections, the affordability of long distance communications (Skype, for example), the implementation of trusted payment systems, and the overall reduction in price of quality computer hardware have all played their part.

Nowadays, the home business industry is growing at around 20% annually and so, taking the above factors into account, it looks as though there are going to be no shortage of people in 2010 looking to both have their cake and eat it!

There are literally millions of results returned by Google for the search term ‘Online Business Opportunities’, and that number continues to grow by the hour. The question is then, why is it such an increasingly popular industry, that attracts hundreds, if not thousands, of newcomers, every single day?

Well, put simply, it can be traced back to the simple market forces of supply and demand. The market reacts according to the demands placed upon it, and it would appear that more and more of us are demanding the flexibility of choosing the hours that we work, from the comfort of our own home whilst building up a business that will pay us, and not somebody else, in years to come.

Another contributing factor to the phenomenal rise in online business opportunities, is the fact that technology has now caught up with our dreams. According to studies, there has been a massive 28% increase in use of Broadband technology within the home in the last 3 years, and 67% of us now use the Internet on a daily basis.

Then, there is the recession, which is showing no signs of relaxing its stranglehold on the economy. As a result of these tough financial times, many more people are being forced to turn to ways of supplementing their main income.

A standard part-time job, perhaps in a shop or office, would have been the only option for people not so long ago, but that is no longer the case. That there are opportunities to make money online is no longer a big secret, and so when people realize that they need extra money, looking on the Internet is now often the first course of action.

Of course, it is not just those struggling financially that have shown an interest in online business opportunities; such an interest has also been shown by those whose bank accounts are not in the red. The reason being that it is more commonly understood that if you want a real future (i.e. one that involves working to get yourself rich as opposed to somebody else rich) then you need to start your own business.

Yet, the chasm between going to work and earning a set income every month, and striking out on your own with your own business venture, remains far too wide and, frankly, far too scary, for the majority of us to consider. Online business opportunities can seem to offer the best of both worlds: the attractiveness of being able to build up a 2nd income stream, with the security of knowing that your regular job is going to cover all the bills in the meantime.

So, to summarize, with more and more people sick and tired of being stuck in the rat-race, and desperate for a way to achieve more time and money freedom, it will come as no surprise to learn that the current growth curve in online business opportunities is set to continue into 2010 and beyond as ever greater numbers of us look to both have our cake and eat it!

Assessing an online business opportunity without first establishing what it is that you want to achieve from it is like going shopping without a list. Whilst it can be done, you will inevitably not be as successful as if you had put some forethought in to it. Therefore, you need to establish some criteria that prospective opportunities must fulfill.

What criteria to use then? Well, it depends on your particular circumstances, but you can use the criteria that I used when starting out in the world of online business as a guide…

- I decided that for me to take an online business opportunity seriously, it would need to have a commission structure or compensation plan in place that would allow me to earn $100,000 within the first year. I was prepared to work hard, so I needed to know that I would be rewarded sufficiently for doing so.

How will you know that you have hit the bulls-eye, if you don’t even know which wall the dartboard is hanging on? So, decide what you personally want financially from any online business that you start, as knowing what you require your online business to earn you is going to narrow down your search tremendously.

- I knew that any business that was seriously going to be able to deliver had to have a proper system of training and support in place. After all, you can have the best business in the world but if there is no proper system in place when you start, you are going to waste an awful lot of time looking for the missing pieces of the jigsaw.

Most people do not consider this aspect of a business opportunity until they have already made an investment (whether it be time, money or both) in it. They get started, come across a problem, and then find there is no-one willing to help them, with the consequence often being that they become disheartened and give up.

- I understood that, particularly in this uncertain economic climate, any business that I was entering into had to be in a growth market, and not a market that was suffering from the vagaries of the so-called ‘recession’. In short, I had to feel confident that as I grew, the business was going to grow with me.

It is no good trying to trying to paddle upstream if the tide on your opportunity has already turned and is going the other way. All businesses have a period of growth, plateau and then, if a new idea is not launched, they will go into decline. Ask the question: When did the top earners have their best year income wise? This year, last year, 5 years ago?

Evaluating online business opportunities using these criteria served me well, and resulted in me finding some absolute diamonds amongst the unfortunate amount of dross that is out there.

The moment that you first decided to change your life, and start your search for a home based business, you probably felt much as I did. At that moment I felt exhilarated, liberated, as if a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

That initial joy is short lived though (about 10 minutes, on average, based on my research), as on turning on your computer, and searching the Internet for relevant opportunities, information overload kicks in, and you realize that it may not be quite as simple to find the perfect opportunity as you first imagined that it would be.

For the phrase ‘Home Based Business’, for example, Google returns over 200’000’000 results. How do you know where to start? What is real and what is a scam? It really is a minefield!

What you need to do is have a very systematic approach. Before you start, write down what it is you want to achieve from a home based business, how much you are prepared to invest, and how long you are prepared to wait for the results to start appearing.

It is not necessary to know exactly what it is that you want to do, in fact, it is actually better to keep an open mind with regards to that. You should know though where it is that you want to go, and when you want to get there by. Once you have your destination in mind, you then just need to find the right vehicle (i.e. business opportunity) to take you there.

With your criteria firmly set, it makes it much easier to know if a particular online business opportunity that you come across is right for you or not. This is the approach that I used and it worked perfectly for me, as it has done for many others too.

Once you have established your objectives, you should then join a home based business online forum, from which you will be able to learn about the various opportunities on offer from those who do not have a vested interest in them. Also, look to read relevant blogs; ones that have been written by someone independent, who is not just pushing one particular product or service.

It is fair to say that there is, as with all aspects of life, a lot of dross mixed in amongst the real opportunities, so it will take a little time and patience to work out what is really worth dedicating yourself too. A healthy amount of skepticism needs to be kept on hand at all times.
