Finding the right niche can make or break your online business. Often, people trying to get into Internet marketing often stumble on this step, because they simply have no idea which markets are worth getting into. Not surprisingly, nobody wants to spend months creating a website that receives very little traffic simply because there is very little demand for the topic in question.
So, how does one go about finding hot niche markets? Some Internet marketers suggest choosing a niche that you are either enthusiastic about or are familiar with. While this may happen in the end, the better approach is to determine what people are truly searching for and base your online business around that. Determining the demand of a particular niche is the very first step.
One way to do this is to use some free tools, such as the free Wordtracker keyword tool (http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com). Type in a search term and Wordtracker will return the amount of daily searches for up to 100 related terms. You want to choose a term that has a decent number of daily searches – any number 10 or greater is worth considering. You may notice that the fewer number of words in a particular search term, the more searches it generally gets. Conversely, search terms that contain more words get less traffic, but are usually easier to rank for.
Next, go to Google (http://www.google.com) and type one of the search terms in quotes. In the upper right hand corner of the search results page, you’ll see the number of pages indexed by Google that are exact matches for your search term. In most cases, when you are just starting niche marketing, try to choose terms that have 20,000 or fewer competing pages when using exact match. Anything higher than this will require some heavy duty SEO to rank well.
Once you find that a certain subject with decent search volume and relatively low competition, it’s time to head over to the Google Adwords Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) to see if there is any money in the market. Type in your phrase and find out if there are any advertisers bidding for your search phrase. If there are a good number of advertisers, it suggests that there is indeed money to be made in your market. If there are no advertisers, the search phrase you’ve chosen may not be commercial in nature, and thus may be difficult to make money with.
You’ve now discovered a niche that has excellent search volume, low competition, and good monetization potential. Once you know how to find quality niches like these, you will be well on your way to earning some serious money online with niche marketing.
