Having some website that makes money off the Internet automatically is an idea that haunts millions of people worldwide. Most people simply don’t realize that a cash generating website is in fact a real business. Like so, there are a myriad of factors which ultimately affect your success.
First and foremost, you need a product to sell. It would be very difficult to start a business of any kind with no products to offer. Imagine for a moment that you are starting a restaurant and you bought the tables, the oven, a brand new refrigerator, spent thousands of dollars decorating the place and on opening day you realize that you forgot to create a menu! In other words, you have everything in place, except the product.

This means that your 20K page views are now only 1K according to your ad provider. At $2 CPM (Cost per thousand impressions), your website is making between $0.50 and $5.00 per day. Ask any webmaster to verify.
Now, if you depend on affiliate commissions, then the math will change slightly. At 1.0% CTR which is quite generous, your website could be sending around 200 people over to the affiliate partners. Many affiliate programs claim conversion ratios of 1 in 50, but in reality 1 in 200 or worse are more likely. So, your super high traffic content site is now paying you roughly ONE affiliate commission per day.
Unless you find a way to get millions of visitors to your website, you are just not going to much make money through advertising or affiliate commissions.

How can you really make money off the Internet?
Starting your own blog or putting together a $99 PDF e-book is not my recommended course of action. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against blog sites or e-books, so let me explain. A stand alone blog site or page promoting an e-book would require an enormous effort and time to become profitable.
On the other hand, let’s say you came up with a special widget and built a website to promote this product. Now, the story changes completely and I totally recommend a blog here to supplement and promote your product. Your website could also sell an e-book on how to maximize your widget’s potential. Do you see the difference?
